In 2006 TVF in cooperation with the Art College in Weissensee-Berlin, sponsored the artistic competition with the title “Explosio”. The aim was to support young and talented artists and to gain a new perspective on the area of controlled explosions.

In total 18 students from different departments in the college took part in the competition, the impulse for which came from Professor Berndt Wilde and Mr Marczinek from TVF.

Three students from the sculpture department were the eventual prize winners, Jule Frommelt, Dieter Lutsch and Irene Paetzug. The jury consisted of Mr Marczinek, Dr Martin Martiny (Vattenfall Europe), Professor Gerhard Strehl (Rector of the Art College), Uschi Frank (video artist) and Professor Dr Matthias Bleyl (theory and history professor at the Art College).

The first prize (3000 Euros) was awarded to Jule Frommelt for her photo installation. The sequence of 12 sepia-toned black and white photographs shows an old power station collapsing during a controlled explosion. The series, viewed as a whole, show the aesthetics of the process of destruction.

The second prize (2000 Euros) went to Dieter Lutsch. The student built an installation out of wooden boards in the form of a cube in the exhibition room. By pulling on a fuse attached to the first board the boards then fall one after the other with a deafening noise, thus making the walls of the exhibition room visible once more.

Irene Pätzug

Irene Paetzug was awarded the third prize (1000 Euros) for her seemingly harmless wooden toys.

However, pull on the strings attached to the three jumping jacks hanging on the wall and they become extremely aggressive. The first has a gun in each hand which are pointed at the observer, the second opens his jacket to reveal an explosive charge and the third presses on the plunger for a controlled explosion.
